A technological reference at the service of sustainable management of the sea
The fisheries and oceanographic research vessel, HANNIBAL
was acquired by the National Institute for the Sciences and
Technologies of the Sea [INSTM] in December 1998, within the
framework of the Tunisian Japanese cooperation [non-repayable
aid]. |
This unit was built in Japan in the shipyards of Niigat
Engineering Co, LTD. The vessel is 33,7 m long and 7,6 m wide,
it can accommodate 20 people [13 crew members and 7 scientists]
and has an autonomy of 15 days |
The ship is equipped with sophisticated navigation, oceanographic and fisheries research equipment, researchers can thus conduct :
pelagic and bottom trawling up to a depth of 800 meters, and pelagic resource surveys using scientific echo-sounders.. |
taking samples of sediments, phytoplankton and water up to a depth of 4000 meters |
the continuous measurement of salinity, temperature and other hydo-biologic parameters
The Hannibal ship makes it possible for INSTM to fully play its role in the promotion of marine research in Tunisia and in the Mediterranean.
